Danger Dam Sign

Mile 85.6 - Most of the feeder dams have these huge signs posted on the shore for all the people on the water to see.  This one is posted near a pier in the Big Slackwater parking lot.  There's a large parking area and boat launch here.

Almost every time I go out for a winter hike along the canal, I see woodpeckers in action.  It really sounds like someone tapping on wood with a small hammer.  Just follow that sound and you can almost always find them.  They eat bugs and larvae that winter in trees.  You can see that this trunk has taken a few hits!
