Mile 84 - 88 - Look, you're not going to like this, but the canal doesn't really exist here. The sign from the above photo says:
Towpath Detour - Due to damage caused by repeated flooding, the towpath between the Dam #4 inlet lock and McMahons Mill is closed until further notice. The area between these two points is extremely hazardous. In order to continue your present direction of travel, you must follow the detour described herein. The detour is a distance of approximately 5 miles and is over narrow paved roads with no shoulders and limited sight distances. Those using the detour should do so with extreme caution.
The detour isn't really as scary as the sign makes it out to be. The people who live and drive nearby know all about the detour and are used to hikers and bikers. The detour bypasses a couple of miles of towpath, you can follow the links here to see what you'd miss:
