INTRODUCTION This
website is a compilation of particular locations along the Chesapeake and Ohio
Canal that are considered “special” in terms of the rocks and/or geologic
events that can be observed at them. It
is intended as a self guided tour in which visitors may select individual
locations that seem most interesting
or use it during extended excursions along the Canal.
Because of excellent Park accessibility, most of the locations are no
more than a mile or two from a parking area.
Several are directly accessible to parking. Each is located by its mileage distance from Georgetown.
Mileage is approximate where a site is located between the mile markers
established by the National Park Service. On the Navigation Bar at the top of this page,
the "Tour Guide" portion of
this website lists the rock formations by mileage from Georgetown. Whether
you identify/orient yourself with The Mileages, the Formation Names, or the
Locations, each can be clicked and will link you to a page with more extensive
info. This Website is intended to educate you at home, and serve as a field
guide as well. A
Glossary is included to assist in defining those
terms that are primarily in the geologic lexicon.
The Geologic Column seeks to list the
rock formations as they relate to each other as well as by their approximate
ages. Photographs identify the
attractions at each site and are intended to be both illustrative and scenic.
The short descriptions of each site are not intended to be exhaustive,
but may lead the visitor to further study.
Please be aware that it is against Federal law to remove rock specimens
from the Park or to deface rock exposures in any way, such as chipping with a
rock hammer. There are specimens
that can be studied and handled at the Williamsport Visitors Center. |
